Does your charity host a fundraising event every year? We hope so! Fundraising events aren’t just about raising money (though they’re great for that), they also spread the word about your cause, spotlight the awesome work you do, help you meet new supporters, and give your current fans a chance to show up and cheer you on.

If your gala and golf tournament are doing well, keep going–these are often beloved signature events that your supporters come to know and love. But what about all the potential donors you’re not reaching yet? You know, the art lovers, the young professionals, the foodies, the introverts, the parents who can’t swing a full day on the golf course, the DIYers, the gamers, the activists, the brunch crowd, the bookworms, the craft beer enthusiasts… the list goes on.

Think Outside the Tee Box

Not everyone wants a fancy gala—or even feels like they belong at one. That doesn’t mean they don’t care about your cause. They might just be waiting for a different kind of invitation to get involved. Sometimes, thinking outside the tee box is exactly what your charity needs.

Here are three proven fundraising events that do exactly that:

1. House Tour

A charity house tour is a ticketed event that invites guests to explore beautifully designed or historically significant homes in your community. Attendees get an inside look at stunning interiors, architecture, or seasonal decor, often with added perks like refreshments or local artist features.

Great for:

  • All types of charities – especially organizations serving unhoused populations, working in community development, or focused on the arts—where the idea of “home” or “place” carries extra meaning.
  • Activating your community – including your board, high-net-worth homeowners and local volunteers
  • Hosting any time of year – with virtually unlimited seasonal themes to match your needs

One to Watch: Hope House’s Joy Home Tour

Ticket Price: $75–$150
Required Effort: High (10+ hours/week, plus volunteer committees)
Earning Potential: $100,000+

Now in its 21st year, Hope House’s Joy Home Tour enables participants to explore beautiful homes that have been lavishly decorated for Christmas. The homes are chosen for their variety—different eras, styles, and locations—making the event feel new and special every year.

With options to join a guided bus tour or do a self-guided adventure, this event sells around 900 tickets a year and raises over $100,000. It attracts a wide audience, many participants have little or no previous exposure to the work that Hope House Guelph does in the community.

It’s a high-effort production, with hundreds of volunteers and year-long committees, but the strong community involvement and consistent sponsor support (over $35,000 annually) speak to its staying power.

For charities looking to raise funds while finding new potential donors, a house tour can be a joyful—and strategic—fit.

“A friend invited me to do the Joy Home Tour this year and it was amazing. It felt like being on an episode of House Hunters! We got to poke around the most beautiful homes and fawn over the immaculate Christmas decorations. It’s such a great idea for a fundraiser.”

2. Peer-to-peer Walk

A peer-to-peer (P2P) walk is a community-driven fundraising event where participants sign up to walk and raise money on your organization’s behalf. Walkers ask friends, family, and coworkers to sponsor them, turning personal networks into powerful fundraising engines. The event itself can be as casual or as polished as you want, from scenic park strolls to themed costume events to wintertime trudges. The best ones feature a post-walk celebration where everyone can connect around your cause.

Great for:

  • Giving people something to do together – a fun, active way to engage families, community groups, workplaces, and friends
  • Making it easy to give – with many donations in the $10–$20 range, it’s a low-barrier way for more people to show their support
  • Uniting your whole community – a feel-good day where everyone shows up, from the folks you serve, to the mayor, to longtime donors, and new faces alike

One to Watch: The Grand Parade

Ticket Price: $0 registration fee
Required Effort:  Medium (5 hours/week for a 3-month campaign)
Earning Potential: $20,000–$75,000+

The Grand Parade is a family-friendly fundraising walk that sees local charities across the country all hosting one epic meandering Mardi Gras walk all on the same day in September. In support of seniors, this peer-to-peer event brings together charity staff, neighbours, friends, and community members who all want to celebrate a special senior in their lives or honour those who care for them.

From feather boas to marching bands, bejeweled walkers to creative costumes, it’s a fun, short walk that gives communities a chance to rally behind their local charity, and gives local charities a turnkey way to raise funds through donations and sponsorships.

With support from the Blue Sea team, the Grand Parade becomes a manageable, medium-effort campaign that runs over just three months—and it’s simple enough to be led by someone with no prior event experience.

“This was our first time doing a national event. To know that, across Canada, there were 32 other organizations doing this really fills our hearts.”

Carey Lucki, Circle of Care, Sinai Health

For charities looking to raise funds while gathering their community and expanding their donor base, a peer-to-peer walk can be an energizing choice.

3. Specialty Silent Auction

While silent auctions aren’t new, they have the potential to be really fresh and cool.

A silent auction is a fundraising event where guests browse a selection of donated items or experiences and place bids—usually on paper or digitally—without an auctioneer. Bidding typically happens over the course of an event, creating a fun sense of competition as people try to win their favorite prizes.

When done right, they’re personal, playful, and full of potential to attract fresh faces. They give people a reason to come out, enjoy themselves, and say yes to supporting your cause.

We’ve seen a resurgence of specialty silent auctions featuring curated, themed prizes—like experience-only packages with hot air balloon rides, private chefs, and getaways; mystery boxes with surprise delights; or high-end items like designer handbags and luxury tech.

Great for:

  • Connecting with new crowds – appealing to folks who love scoring unique experiences, snagging cool collectibles, or hunting for great deals
  • Showcasing local businesses and sponsors – featuring curated items that highlight community partners and special experiences
  • Boosting fundraising potential – creating multiple opportunities to raise funds throughout the event, often with minimal extra effort:

One to Watch: Power of the Purse

Ticket Price: $75–$100
Yearly Commitment: Medium
Earning Potential: $50,000+

In Toronto, BGC St. Alban’s Club launched the Power of the Purse event more than a decade ago. This speciality silent auction is designed to stand out and attract new supporters. It started as a small capital campaign that auctioned off donated high-end handbags from Tory Burch, Coach, Kate Spade and more.

Held in a trendy venue in Liberty Village with food, drinks, musical performances by Club youth (service users), and 80–100 attendees, it offered a fun, social night that cleared $50,000 for capital upgrades to the Club. Even better: Most guests weren’t Club parents—they were new donors, friends-of-friends, or local professionals drawn in by the unique experience. It took effort to pull off, especially in the early years, but once relationships were in place, sponsors and donors stepped up year after year. When COVID hit, the event shifted online—showing just how flexible this format can be.

“We had some women taking home two or three high-end bags. ‘It’s for charity!’ they’d laugh. I love finding ways to make giving genuinely fun for people.”

Anna Sturino, Director of Operations, BGC St. Alban’s Club

For charities aiming to tap into new audiences and boost fundraising, a creative, niche event like this can unlock bigger dollars and build lasting community connections.

Open the Door to New Donors with Fundraising Events

We could easily list 300 more creative events—from trivia nights and paint-and-sip parties to food truck festivals and silent discos—but the point stays the same: having a calendar full of diverse, inclusive events helps your charity connect with fresh, new donors.

If you’re in the market for new faces, fresh energy, and donors who don’t know you yet but will stick around once they do focus on events that reflect different interests, price points, and spaces where more people can say yes.

Whether it’s a design-lover’s house tour, a parade-themed walk, or a specialty silent auction, these events help you meet new audiences where they are—and invite them into something meaningful. Because every new guest is a potential donor, advocate, or friend. All you have to do is open the door.
